Students call for a National Strike for 48 hours in Nicaragua

The so-called University Coordination for Democracy and Justice urged the Nicaraguan private sector to decree a national strike for 48 hours, as a measure of protest in order to stop state violence in the context of the sociopolitical crisis that Nicaragua is going through.

“We urge the private sector and the Nicaraguan society in general to strengthen actions in a fiscal disobedience and to firmly stand up to the state violence by declaring a national strike for 48 hours,” said the university coalition in a statement.

The alliance of university movements demanded the presence in Nicaragua of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (CIDH), the European Union (EU) and the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS).

They also called Nicaraguans to “use every civic mechanism they have available to stop these criminal acts,”

Nicaragua reaches 65 days since the bloodiest sociopolitical crisis began in 1980, with Daniel Ortega also as president, and that has killed at least 200 people.
