Alert for descent of lahar from the Santiaguito volcano of Guatemala

The authorities warned today about the descent of a lahar of the Santiaguito volcano, located in the western department of Quetzaltenango, with this there would be three active cones in Guatemala.

The National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh), detailed that the lahar is moderate and has a dimension of 15 meters wide by 1.5 high.

The institution  added that it draws volcanic material with blocks up to 1.5 meters in diameter, tree trunks, shrubs and sediments.

The scientific entity warned that it is not ruled out that the lahar will become stronger due to the number of tributaries that join it in its journey to the Samalá River.

Meanwhile, the Pacaya volcano, located in the municipality of San Vicente Pacaya, in the southern department of Escuintla, is also active and forced the temporary closure of operations at the La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City.
